5 Sneaky Signs of Back Pain
Back pain is a common sign of aging, as eight out of every 10 people will experience back pain at some point during their lives. While an acute injury can occur, most of the time, it’s due to normal wear and tear that adds up over time.
While some causes (lifting heavy objects, bending over for long periods of time) are more obvious, there are some sneaky signs of back pain as well.
Deptford Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five of these causes you may not realize are doing damage to your back.
- Weak Core Muscles
Most people think of their core muscles as their abdomen. While that’s true, weak core muscles put extra strain on the back as that part of the body tries to overcompensate. Exercises to strengthen the core like sit-ups and crunches along with maintaining a good posture can help.
- Poor Sleep
Our muscles relax and repair themselves by removing lactic acid buildup during the sleep process, so if you’re not getting enough or it’s being interrupted, this process cannot be completed and can leave you feeling tight and sore.
- Improper Shoes
If you’re leaning forward or backward to stabilize your foot, that can put extra strain on your back. An easy fix to this issue is to go to wear shoes with proper support when you’re walking or running. Flip-flops, high heels, and sandals without good support should be limited.
- Sitting in the Same Position
You might not think that sitting would put strain on your back, but doing so for more than 30 minutes at a time can start to bring on pain. You should either get up and walk around or—at the very least—change positions every half hour.
- A New Member of the Family
You know that lifting and carrying objects can lead to back soreness, but that might not be top-of-mind when you’re playing with a new grandchild or pet. Taking a baby out of a crib or into or out of a car seat can also put added strain on the back if you’re not bending over and lifting properly.

4 Ways to Prevent Long-Lasting Damage of a Scar
Scarring is a natural part of the wound-healing process, but unfortunately, it can be distressing to us, especially if the scar is on a part of the body that’s visible to others. There are measures you can take, however, that can cut down on the severity of scarring. And even having a scar be smaller or lighter can make a big difference depending on the area.
Deptford Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has four ways to minimize scarring from a wound.
- Keep the Wound Clean
Be sure to wash the wound with water and mild soap as soon as possible after it happens. This keeps out germs and washes away debris, allowing the healing process to begin more quickly.
- Keep the Wound Moist and Covered
Use petroleum jelly or an antibiotic ointment to keep the wound moist and prevent it from scabbing. This will also keep the size of a potential scar down. Using a bandage in the first few days after the wound occurs will ensure that it remains moist and no debris can get into it.
- If You Get Stitches, Follow Doctor’s Instructions on Care
Following instructions for care and getting the stitches out when it’s recommended to do so will help minimize scarring. If your wound is so deep that you can’t control the bleeding or if it is very painful, you’ll want to seek medical attention instead of trying to do your wound care at home.
- Use Sunscreen on the Wound After it Heals
Once the wound is healed, the skin will be more fragile and can burn easily, which will darken it compared to the rest of your skin. Applying a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher (and reapplying it frequently if you’re out in the sun for a prolonged period of time) will keep it from being discolored and will eventually help the scar fade faster.

5 Ways a Senior Can Stretch Their Dollar on a Fixed Income
The estimated average Social Security retirement benefit will be just over $1,600 a month in 2022—a modest increase over previous years but barely at the level of recent inflation. Many seniors have their standard Medicare Part B premium taken out of their Social Security check too, so that number is even lower when you consider “take-home pay.”
So, for those who don’t have any other forms of income, any ways to save money are extremely important. Deptford Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing would like to share five ways to squeeze every penny.
- Check for Senior Discounts
Many restaurants (most fast-food ones) will offer discounts to those over the age of 60. These perks range from senior menus to free soft drinks or coffee to a blanket 10% or 20% discount. Membership cards from places like AARP and AAA also help.
- Buy in Bulk
You don’t need to pay for a membership to a place like Sam’s Club or Costco to do this. You can buy items in bulk at the grocery store by buying the highest quantity of tissues, paper towels, etc. You can also find bulk deals online.
- Check for Property Tax Discounts
All states have some level of property tax benefit for seniors if you own your home. Homestead exemptions can be larger for seniors, and some states will freeze tax increases once you hit a certain age.
- Home Warranty
If you’ve had your home for many years, one blanket expense through a home warranty may make more sense than opening yourself up to thousands of dollars’ worth of costly repairs for large items like refrigerators and heating and cooling systems.
- Check Your Cell Phone Carrier
A cell phone is almost a necessity these days, but even the major carriers offer senior discounts. You will also want to check your plan to make sure you’re not paying for features you don’t use. It also makes sense for some to buy a prepaid plan if they don’t use a cell phone that often.
